Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair: Update Live!

If you own Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair*, you may have noticed a free update politely knocking on your door today. You should let it in and offer it a cup of tea, as this update has made the Impossible Lair, not-so-impossible, that is, if you want it to be.

The update also includes an optional 8-Bit soundtrack, perfect for fossils stuck in the past.

*If you don’t own Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, you’re missing out. Our Nan said it’s proper good.

Changes to the Impossible Lair: Explained

At first glance, it could be assumed that we’ve inserted an “easy-mode” into the Impossible Lair, but that’s not exactly the case.

We’ve given players more options for taking on Capital B’s sadistic platforming gauntlet:

Just like beefore.

You’ll notice that when you try to enter the Impossible Lair you will be presented with two options.

Option 1: The “Not So Impossible Lair” which offers up checkpoints (Checkmates, get off my back, Hyle), which save your best “Bee Shield Score.”

Option 2: The “Impossible Lair”, which is mostly for maniacs who don’t want checkpoints OR bees.

If you’re looking to experience the Impossible Lair like it was before this update, choose option 1, and always select “Start” after each of your attempts.

The Not So Impossible Lair: Can I have the check, mate?

The Not So Impossible Lair is the same old Impossible Lair but with checkpoints. These checkpoints (Checkmates) function slightly differently to those you come across in regular 2D levels. Each time you pass a checkpoint, your “Bee Shield Score” will be saved. If you select a checkpoint to start from, you’ll start with bees equal to your corresponding Bee Shield Score for that section.

The Impossible Lair: Let me go in naked, and while I am at it, give me that Golden Try Tonic.

You’re maniacs, the lot of you. Enter the Impossible Lair without bees or checkpoints and take your shot at being galaxy brained.

Previously, the Golden Try Tonic could only be earned by getting through the Impossible Lair in one attempt after the tutorial, but now you can obtain it this way too!

Good luck!

Other 8-Bits

Musical magician Tater-Tot Tunes has remixed the entire Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair soundtrack in beautifully bleepy 8-Bit! To hear it (only applies to 2D levels), jump into the menus and flick it on!

Why did you make these changes?

We want people to be able to finish the game, and we’ve strived to find a balance between offering a little help but retaining a sense of achievement.

We feel that the changes we’ve implemented offer those who are less comfortable with non-stop hardcore platforming, an optional chance to get through the Impossible Lair. The overall challenge of the game isn’t affected, as completing the Impossible Lair can still be done in the same way it was pre-update, too.

Why did Capital B allow checkpoints to be put into the Impossible Lair?

There’s nothing a suitcase full of Quills and a few white lies can’t fix.

Can I still earn the Golden Try Tonic the old way?

Where is Gavsting?

Gavsting has gone missing! In his place, another Beettalion Guard with immaculate hair and an angelic singing voice has joined the fight.

Ok, *exhales*, that’s everything covered! We hope you enjoy dipping into the update, whether it’s to take another crack at the Lair, the Golden Try Tonic, or to treat your ears to some charming chiptune.

Reminder: If you own Yooka-Laylee on Nintendo Switch, you can get Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair for 50% off until April 19th!
