Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair: The Scoop So Far

It’s been a month and a bit since we lifted the lid and revealed our next game: Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. If you were to ask us how we expected the news to bee received, we’d have said “via the paperboy of course” and you’d have rolled your eyes.

We reckon it might be a bit of a pain in the stinger to keep track of everything we’ve revealed so far, so we’ve put together this little hive of information for you to comb through in your own time.

The Reveal Tease

What’s going on here then?! Not content with simply banging out a trailer, we decided to wing it a bit and set our community on fire 24 hours before the reveal going live. That’s how it’s done, right? We gathered a dream team of highly talented individuals who worked together tirelessly to create this teaser video. We took a vow of silence and not a single member of Playtonic tweeted for 24 hours, except for Duncan Treadgold who received 10 lashes for his actions – but we won’t name names.

Reveal Trailer

We let the bat out the bag and we revealed our next game: Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair! Putting the trailer together was a pretty sticky process. A lot is going on with this project and so it was a bit of a balancing act – what do we reveal and when? How do we create a real buzz?

Word in the hive is we’ll be revealing more feature details very soon, but don’t tell PR we hinted at it. We reckon they don’t read these articles because they either trust us too much or have had enough of our nonsense.

Nintendo Treehouse Live

It’s always nice when Nintendo tolerates us. We sent design-rhyme-duo Harry and Gary over to E3, where they introduced the world to some complete level playthroughs for the first time. They also messed around in the Overworld for a bit too, but ramp into a bug (not a bee) that thwarted their plans. Harry and Gary successfully winged it through the rest of the demo though, so it only stung for a moment. (We’ve fixed the bug, please buy our game).

Character spotlight: queen phoebee

For those who like to dig a little deeper (hello Hyle), we put together an article about a new regal addition to the Playtonic character colony: Queen Phoebee! You may have spotted her in our key art, and she was around for a bit of the Treehouse Live demo. If you’re interested in character design, and/or are a fan of Steve Mayles, you should have a comb through.

David Wise track: Mechanical melody

We know you’re all keen to find out what David Wise, Grant Kirkhope and our very own composers have in store for you, so we got the ball rolling and released one of David’s good uns onto Youtube. We’ll be releasing a few more tracks in the run-up to launch too, so keep those ears peeled!

That’s all for now, but we reckon you should check in with us again very soon for some more of the good stuff…
